New European “Cookie Law” Guidance Published

On 26 May 2011, new rules on the use of website cookies will come into force and threatens to drastically affect our internet browsing experience.  The task of obtaining consent without damaging user experience will be a significant challenge for companies across Europe and the guidance published last week by the UK data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office, provides a useful insight into how this can be practically achieved.  The guidance discusses the use of pop-ups, terms and conditions and other steps to obtain consent, with the clear underlying message that action must now be taken.

Dentons’ News Flash summarises the key points raised in the ICO’s guidance and analyses the challenges and implications for global businesses in complying with the new rules.  One things for certain, it’s now time for companies to get their houses in order.
